Every tool follows the same transparent calculation pipeline. Geometry, product assumptions, purchase rounding, and optional prices remain separate so visitors can audit the result.
1. Validate the project inputs
Required values must be present, dimensions and product yields must be positive, percentages stay within their documented ranges, and related values must make physical sense. For example, a cutout cannot exceed the floor area that contains it.
2. Normalize measurements to SI units
US and metric values are treated as two displays of one physical project. Lengths convert to meters, areas to square meters, volumes to cubic meters, and liquid paint to liters before formulas run. Switching units converts the current quantity instead of reinterpreting the same number.
3. Calculate exact geometry and product need
Each calculator uses pure functions that do not read the page, storage, advertising, analytics, or network. Rectangle, circle, cylinder, perimeter, coverage, and spacing formulas are applied to normalized values. The exact result is preserved before any allowance or package rule.
4. Apply the visitor's allowance
Waste, extra paint, settling, and similar percentages are explicit, visible, and editable. The adjusted amount equals the exact requirement multiplied by one plus the allowance fraction. A default is a starting convenience, not a product claim.
5. Perform purchase rounding
The adjusted amount is divided by visitor-supplied coverage, yield, or package size. Purchase rounding moves up to whole packages because partial boxes, bags, or cans are not usually purchasable. Paint package combinations can minimize cost when every package price exists, or minimize surplus otherwise.
6. Estimate local cost
Cost is purchase quantity multiplied by the price entered in the active currency. The site does not use retailer APIs or claim current market prices. A blank price suppresses cost without blocking the quantity result.
Precision and tests
Conversion constants are defined in one shared module. Tests cover representative US and metric fixtures, decimal dimensions, invalid relationships, package boundaries, storage failures, share-link filtering, and interface interactions. Display rounding happens after calculations, not between formula steps.
