How the calculation works
The calculator converts dimensions to meters, adds each rectangular area, subtracts declared cutouts, and applies the chosen waste percentage. It divides the adjusted area by the box or package coverage supplied by the visitor and rounds up. Optional piece dimensions provide a cross-check against the declared package coverage.
US example
A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. With 10% waste, the adjusted area is 132 sq ft. A product covering 20 sq ft per box requires 7 whole boxes.
Metric example
A 3.6 m by 3 m room is 10.8 m². With 10% waste, the adjusted area is 11.88 m². A product covering 1.8 m² per box requires 7 whole boxes.
Measure complex rooms as rectangles
Break an L-shaped or irregular floor into rectangles that do not overlap. Add each rectangle in Advanced options. Use cutouts only for floor area that truly receives no finish material, such as a permanent cabinet footprint when the selected installation method stops at the cabinet.
Waste is a project decision
The default 10% allowance is visible and editable. A simple straight installation in a square room may use less. Diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, many doorways, damaged pieces, selective color blending, and keeping future repair stock may use more. Follow the flooring or tile manufacturer’s written instructions.
Box coverage and piece cross-checking
Package coverage is required because it determines the whole boxes to buy. Optional piece width, piece length, and pieces per package give a second estimate. If that calculated coverage differs from the stated box coverage by more than 2%, the result warns you to recheck the label and units.
Limitations
- Layout pattern, board or tile dimensions, room shape, breakage, color lots, and installer technique can change waste.
- The calculator measures finish-material quantity, not underlayment, adhesive, grout, transitions, fasteners, or trim.
- Subfloor condition, movement joints, wet areas, and manufacturer installation requirements need separate review.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need coverage per box?
Piece counts and package contents vary. The coverage printed on the exact box ties the room estimate to a product you can purchase.
Is 10% waste right for every flooring project?
No. It is an editable starting point. Complex rooms, diagonal patterns, large pieces, matching, and repair stock can justify a different allowance.
Can I calculate an L-shaped room?
Yes. Open Advanced options and enter the shape as two rectangles. Add the areas, then declare any true cutouts separately.
