Map the bed into simple shapes
Sketch the area and divide it into rectangles, circles, and triangles. A rectangle uses length times width. A circle uses pi times half the diameter squared. A triangle uses one-half times base times perpendicular height. Keep shapes from overlapping when you add them.
Curved beds rarely match perfect geometry. Measure more than one width and use smaller sections when accuracy matters. For a long irregular border, divide it into short rectangles using local average widths. Record how the approximation was made so the final allowance has context.
Measure the existing layer
Do not automatically add a full new depth over material already present. Probe several locations because mulch and soil settle unevenly. Record a representative existing depth and the target finished depth. The added depth is the difference, unless the project calls for removal, mixing, grading, or replacement.
Keep material away from trunks and plant stems as appropriate. A volume estimate cannot decide plant-health details or drainage transitions.
Choose depth for the material and purpose
The calculator starts at 3 in, displayed as 7.5 cm in metric mode. This is editable. Extension guidance commonly discusses a range for mulch, but a universal value would ignore material particle size, existing layers, plants, weed pressure, moisture, slope, drainage, and climate.
Topsoil, compost, gravel, and decorative stone serve different purposes and may use very different depths. Confirm the intended layer and preparation before treating the default as a target.
Settling and uneven surfaces
Loose material can settle after placement. Organic mulch decomposes. Soil and compost can compact. An editable settling allowance increases calculated volume before package rounding. Use supplier guidance, local experience, and site variation to choose it. Do not use a large allowance to conceal uncertain measurements when the area can be rechecked.
Bags versus bulk delivery
Bag labels may state cubic feet or liters. Bulk suppliers may quote cubic yards or cubic meters and can have minimum delivery quantities. Convert the adjusted project volume into the supplier’s unit, then ask whether the quoted volume is loose, compacted, screened, or rounded by loader bucket or truck capacity.
Compare total delivered cost, access, placement labor, storage, and leftover handling. Bag and bulk prices are not directly comparable until they are normalized to volume.

Also record existing depth samples, selected settling percentage, bag volume or bulk sales unit, price, delivery minimum, and access constraints.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only the longest length and widest width of an irregular bed.
- Using diameter as radius for a circle.
- Mixing inches of depth with feet of area without conversion.
- Ignoring an existing layer.
- Treating liters, cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters as interchangeable numbers.
- Comparing one bag price with one bulk-unit price without normalizing volume.
- Piling material against trunks, stems, siding, or drainage openings.
Limits and checks
This method estimates geometric volume. Material density, moisture, screening, compaction, decomposition, slope loss, and supplier measurement practices can change the delivered or finished result. It does not test soil, select amendments, diagnose drainage, or recommend material for a plant.
Confirm current horticultural guidance for the material and location. Check delivery access, utility covers, drains, irrigation, edging height, plant crowns, and the destination for excess material before ordering.
